Moderate Risk Animals

The animals on this page are at moderate risk. This means that these animals have a medium risk of harm to your life. These animals will also be harder to train than other animals and you will have to be more careful when handling these animals. Make sure these animals know that they can trust you so you have a lower chance of injury.

Skunks

Skunk

Skunks don't seem like pets. But, they can be pets, you first have to find out if they are legal in your state first. If they are legal, their scent glands would be removed so when you bring them outside, keep them on a leash. Skunks are curious and hyper creatures, you would want a large area or a spare room for skunks to live in. You could either get a dog or cat bed or a pile of blankets for them. They adapt to human shcedule and are really adorable when they start to trust you. But, they will take up lots of your time and you will have to be dedicated to take care of them. They can bite if they feel threatened and you have to be careful to make sure they don't bite anyone or they will get taken away.

Short Tailed Opossum

Opossum

Short tailed opossum are friendly and docile when they are used to humans. They are fairly tidy animals and love to excercise. Make sure you have something like a bird cage for them that is escape proof. It is best to just get one because they have a tendency to fight their own species and if you had two in a cage, they would most likely try to kill one another. Because of their sharp teeth, it is best to not try and anger them or make them feel threatened. They are a good pet for beginner pet owners but not for a child becasue they are nocturnal.

Porcupines

Porcupine

Contrary to popular belief. Porcupines cannot shoot their quills, so the only way you will get pricked is if you handle them incorrectly. Porcupines mostly lounge around most of the time only getting up for food or checking surroundings. They can be territorial at some times but they can be friendly when they get used to you. It is best if you have no pets before you get a porcupine because the porcupine might stick their quills on your other pets face. They are usually not agressive though which is a good thing.
